Unicompartmental / partial knee replacement

In some patients, the arthritis does not affect all areas of the knee. Surgeons tend to consider knees as having three compartments; the medial compartment (between the femur and the tibia on the inside/medial side of the knee), the lateral compartment (between the femur and the tibia on the outside/lateral side of the knee) and the patella-femoral compartment (between the back of the patella/kneecap and the front of the knee).

If arthritis affects only one or two compartments, then there are some advantages of having a partial knee replacement over a total knee replacement:

- Faster recovery from surgery
- Shorter hospital stay
- Smaller incision
- Increased range of motion
- Near normal knee biomechanics

The risks of surgery are similar to a total knee replacement, however, the failure rate is higher. This is typically because of progression of arthritis throughout the rest of the knee. They can quite easily be revised to a total knee replacement if required.

Payment options

If you have private health insurance it is important to check how much your policy will pay, because some policies do not cover all the associated costs. This is due to the fact that many insurance companies have not increased their cover for surgical fees for over 15 years. This is despite inflation and the rapidly increasing costs of medical indemnity insurance.

For patients paying for their own treatment there is the option of fixed price surgery. This cost includes medical fees, hospital fees, drugs and surgical implants, physiotherapy in hospital, any medical treatment whilst in hospital, and for an extended stay for complications directly related to the procedure for 30 days following surgery.
